Clubs are wonderful things or so I have been told. In order to find one for me, I went to Clubfest. When I got there I was almost overwhelmed by the sheer amount of clubs there. There were three however that caught my eye.
The first was the Medieval Recreationalist Club. What I can I say; I came for the puffy pants and stayed because it sounded interesting? They spend their time learning about medieval combat techniques. It sounded like it could be fun so I gave them my email address. However, it took them a long time to send me any information about it so by the time I got it I had decided that it wasn’t for me.
The second club I checked out was Mock Trial. This one I had actually heard of prior to going to Clubfest, having seen their flyers around campus. This organization, as their name suggests, spends their time creating trials and competing in courtroom competitions. However, I ultimately rejected this one because they wanted 50 dollars to join and it requires a huge time commitment, which I wasn’t sure I wanted to make.
The third was the Iowa State Robotics Club. Their booth was cool, which is why I stopped. They had a robot that you could interact with. And overall what they do, building and competing with robots, sounds like fun. Regrettably they meet on Thursday night, which is the day that I spend with my sister, so I had to decline their invitation.
So I didn’t find a club for me. And maybe I’m just not a club kind of girl. After all as Groucho Marx famously said, “I refuse to join any club that would have me a member.” But then could just me being melodramatic again. Maybe I just need to try again next semester or next year. After all there are over 800 clubs and organizations, there has to be one for me.

  1. I think that you have a positive attitude. At least you attempted to find a club for you and there definitely is a club for you out there you just have to keep looking. If you haven't looked maybe you should try looking online at the clubs to see if there is one you like.

  6. You are most defifninely right. There are so many clubs to chose from and the key is to find one that fits you the best and not chose one just to be in one.

  8. Good for you, you figured out you need to find something you're really passionate about before you get involved. Most people would just join to be a part of something. Don't worry, you'll figure out what works best for you.

  9. I agree with Heide. It isnt worth getting involved in a club unless it is something you are really passionate about and are willing to put in the time. This way it will be much more rewarding and wont feel like something extra you need to do but rather something you want to do.

  10. If you're still looking to get involved in a club, the full list is posted on the ISU website. You should check it out and see if there's something there that works with your schedule and your interests. Hope you find something you enjoy!

  11. Keep looking for something you're passionate about! If you don't like participating in it, then you will just dread going to it. It's good that you know what you want (or don't want) though!
